Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ameri's Visit to Guangzhou
Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Goli Ameri led a delegation to Guangzhou September 18-20. Assistant Secretary Ameri spoke to 80 students at Zhongshan University on September 18 about studying in the United States and educational exchange opportunities. Students posed questions on the value of studying in the United States, science vs. liberal art school admissions, and the new U.S.-China exchange program outlined in an MOU recently signed by A/S Ameri and Vice Minister of Education Zhang, Xin Sheng in Beijing.
In the evening the delegation attended a reception at the Consul General's Residence with over 40 alumni of State Department exchange programs.
On the morning of September 19th, Assistant Secretary Ameri and her delegation had breakfast with representative from the American Chamber of Commerce in South China. They discussed potential areas of cooperation and the value of expanding public-private partnerships in China to facilitate educational and cultural exchange.
On September 19 Assistant Secretary Ameri and Deputy Assistant Secretary Farrell conducted a Town Hall at Jinan University with 60 students. The discussion ranged from view on the Olympics, opportunities for Chinese students to study in the United States, factors affecting the integration of immigrants into U.S. society, and benefits of programs administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
