Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status

If you wish to abandon your permanent residence status and relinquish your green card, please download and complete Form I-407, "Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status"

You should then submit the following three items to the USCIS office in Guangzhou at #1, Shamian South Street, Shamian Island, Guangzhou 510133 (广州市沙面南街1号  美国驻广州总领事馆  邮编: 510133):

  1. Completed Form I-407
  2. Your Permanent Resident Card
  3. Reentry Permit [if available]
  4. Your name and mailing address in Chinese characters, including the zip code and your phone number.

Once the USCIS office receives your materials, the appropriate documentation stamps will be placed on the form along with the USCIS officer's signature. A copy of this form will be returned to you at the address you provided. The copy of the completed I-407 is your receipt for the return of your Permanent Resident Card. You should keep a copy of the completed I-407 with your passport when you travel to the United States.

Upon the completion of the I-407, you will revert to your previous status as a non-immigrant alien and may apply for admission into the United States in the manner of any other person of your nationality.

Abandoning your Permanent Resident Card and status does not affect your ability to apply to immigrate to the United States at some future time. However, you will have to begin the process anew and apply through the usual application process.
