Dear Team USA Members:
Congratulations on achieving the great honor of representing your school and your country at this year's World University Games in Shenzhen. In the spirit of international athletic competition, you and your fellow competitors from around the world are all serving as ambassadors of your countries and doing your part to increase global understanding and build peace through the pursuit of common goals.
I am so pleased that the tournament has brought more than 500 American athletes, coaches, and staff, the highest number of American participants in the history of these games, to Shenzhen this year. Your participation will cultivate the growing friendship and partnership between the Chinese and the American people.
Sports have a unique ability to transcend politics and bring disparate groups together for a shared purpose. In addition to sharing your enthusiasm for sports, I urge all athletes to seek greater understanding and find additional commonalities with your fellow competitors from different parts of the world.
You are all playing an important role in building connections between the United States, China, and the many other countries participating in the World University Games, and you should be proud of what you are accomplishing. I commend all of the athletes, coaches, families, and staff for making this event such a great success. To all of you, I say thank you and good luck!
Sincerely yours,
Hillary Rodham Clinton
