Application Procedures
DNA Testing
In certain cases, beneficiaries will be unable to establish their claimed biological relationship to the satisfaction of the Consulate General. Absent other credible proof of the claimed relationship, genetic testing could provide a reliable means of determining and verifying such a biological relationship.
**It is the applicant’s responsibility to strictly follow the DNA testing guidelines given by the Consulate General.
The Department of State requires that any DNA testing for visa and citizenship purposes must be done by a lab that is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Please see Names of AABB accredited labs.
*DNA testing done by labs that are not on the AABB list will not be accepted.
Genetic testing procedures:
- First, you must select among the AABB-accredited laboratories listed in the above website and contact the laboratory directly to make necessary arrangements (including payment) for conducting the genetic test. At your request, the laboratory will send a buccal swab kit and explicit instructions to our post. Make sure you send a copy of this letter to your laboratory.
- After we receive the testing kit, we will contact you by phone to come to the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou for collection of biological samples (buccal samples of the U.S. petitioner, if required, can be collected in the United States by the same U.S. laboratory or at the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou);
- Biological samples will be taken by a panel physician at the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou. RMB100 per person will be charged for the service by the panel physician.
- The samples will be returned to the designated laboratory for analysis.
**It is important to remind the laboratory to follow the instructions below:
