Economic/Political Section (E/P)

Guangzhou's Economic/Political (E/P) Section coordinates closely with the Economic; Political; and Environment, Science, Technology and Health Sections in Beijing.  We focus on policy areas of U.S.-China relations where developments in south China have a special impact and relevance for U.S. interests.

On the economic side, we cover a broad range of issues, including bilateral trade issues such as market access and intellectual property rights, macroeconomic policy, financial sector developments, and south China’s rural economy. Environmental and health priorities include climate change, air and water quality, wildlife preservation and pandemic diseases.  With regard to political issues, we focus on labor issues, reform initiatives, the development of civil society and human rights.

Consulate staff work closely with government officials, businesses, academic and other public institutions to advocate on behalf of U.S. interests, to track policy directions and goals and to report on developments in this important region.  We work closely with other offices at the consulate, including the Foreign Commercial Service Office, Agricultural Trade Office and Patent and Trademark Office on assisting U.S. businesses exporting to south China, investing here or seeking to attract investment to the United States.  We cooperate with the Public Affairs Section to promote the Consulate's public diplomacy goals, especially those related to U.S. economic and political priorities.
