Town Hall Meeting

“How Truly American is American Music?”

Traditional kinds of American music like Rock n’ Roll, Blues, Jazz, and Folk come from the sharing of so many different cultures. It could only have come from America.  But American music is listened to all over the world today, and people young and old, no matter their national origin, can call artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, and many more recent stars their own.  So what makes music from America into American music?

In this Town Hall we’ll ask:

  • Where does American music come from?
  • Is a country’s culture truly its own if it’s everywhere?

We’ll share:

  • The diverse roots of American folk music.
  • The history of Blues and Jazz.
  • How Rock n’ Roll and Soul developed.
  • How popular music from America became known worldwide.

And we’ll listen to some oldies.

Time:    Thursday, July 24, 2008, 7:00-9:00pm
