Possible Nuclear Test in North Korea

On Monday, October 9, U.S. and South Korean intelligence services detected a seismic event at a suspected nuclear test site in North Korea. North Korea has claimed it conducted an underground nuclear test, but these reports are unconfirmed. The United States Government is monitoring the situation closely. As of the morning of October 10, the Embassy has received no information from any source indicating that there are health dangers that pose a risk to American citizens in any areas of China.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in China continue to operate normally and to provide services to the public during regular business hours. In the event of any type of emergency, the Embassy will notify the American community immediately.

As a standing policy, the Embassy urges Americans residing anywhere overseas to always be prepared for the possibility of an emergency. Hundreds of expatriate Americans each year are forced by personal emergencies (for example, death or illness in the family) to return to the United States on short notice. Advice for emergency preparedness is available on the State Department’s website at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/tips/emergencies/emergencies_1212.html.

Americans living or traveling in China are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy or their nearest U.S. Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov/. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency. U.S. citizens may contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate directly to register in case they experience difficulties registering online.

U.S. citizens planning to travel to China should consult the Department of State's country-specific Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, Consular Information Sheets, the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement and other information, available at http://travel.state.gov/. Up-to-date information on security conditions can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 in the U.S. and for callers outside the U.S. and Canada a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.
