Warden Message - Typhoon Megi

This warden message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens residing or traveling in South China that the Joint Typhoon Warning Center has issued warnings for a typhoon/tropical cyclone system, designated Typhoon Megi. As of At 5:00 a.m. on October 21 the typhoon was centered in the eastern South China Sea, approximately 430 km southeast of Huilai County, Guangdong province (19.2N, 117.5E) with maximum wind force up to scale 16 (52m/s).
China’s Central Meteorological Observatory forecasts that the typhoon will move north at a speed of 10 km per hour approaching central and eastern Guangdong, and is likely to make landfall between Shenzhen and Raoping with the intensity of a severe typhoon sometime between the night of Friday October 22 and noon Saturday, October 23. Most parts of Fujian and eastern Guangdong will see heavy rain or rainstorms with isolated severe rainstorms. China’s Central Meteorological Observatory has issued flood warnings for Hainan Province and has advised ships to return to harbor. We will continue to monitor Typhoon Megi’s track and will issue updated messages as necessary. Please monitor the typhoon’s track by listening to the radio, watching television, or monitoring weather websites such as the China Meteorological Association, the Hong Kong Observatory, and Tropical Storm Risk. Locate shelter, monitor media reports, and follow all official instructions. Carry your travel documents at all times (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture IDs, etc.) or secure them in a safe, waterproof location. You should also contact friends and family in the United States with updates about your whereabouts.
