Charity Event: Walk-A-Thon

Jun 22nd Charity Walk-a-Thon on Shamian Island

"Sichuan Tingzhu, Zhongguo Jiayou"

Braving tropical heat and humidity, following weeks of intense rain and flooding, marchers - including EAP Assistant Secretary Chris Hill, FAO Director General Fu Lang, CG Robert Goldberg and 300 Chinese and American employees of the Consulate and local businesses – participated in a June 22 charity walk-a-thon to raise funds for victims of the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan and west China.  In his remarks before the start of the walk, A/S Hill reminded the participants that as we walk together and as we are joined together by this tragedy, we must also work together to look for ways to help the people who have suffered so much from the earthquake.  Consulate employees and family members raised nearly USD 10,000, through the sale of donated t-shirts, baked goods and candies.  The local media – internet, print and TV – covered the event, and despite some restrictions on what to say and how to report, the message was clear, “America Cares about the Chinese People.”
