Adoption

Welcome to the Adoptions Unit in Guangzhou!

We hope the following information will help make your visit to this city and to our Consulate General go smoothly. Enclosed you will find all the forms necessary to file the immigrant visa petition and apply for the immigrant visa on behalf of the child you are adopting.

While you may wish to be involved with all steps of the process, in most instances your adoption agency representative will come to the Consulate on your behalf. On the morning of your appointment, either you or your representative will submit your child's immigrant visa application, Chinese passport, and related paperwork to staff in the Adopted Children Immigrant Visa Unit. Our staff will confirm that all documents are complete and accurate before passing them to a U.S. consular officer for final approval. In order to save time, please complete all forms before you or your agency representatives present them to the Adoption Unit staff. We have provided instructions to agency facilitators on how to assist you in properly completing the forms.

That afternoon, you or your agency representative should visit our cashier to pay the visa application and issuance fee (US $400). Payment may be made in cash, either in U.S. dollars or Chinese RMB at the current exchange rate, using traveler's checks, or with a US-based credit card (American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted).
On the afternoon on the next day after your scheduled appointment, you and your adopted child will come to the Consulate for an oath-taking ceremony. Before departing from your hotel, please leave behind all cameras and other recording devices, as visitors are not allowed to bring such equipment into the Consulate because of security concerns. During the ceremony you will be asked to swear and affirm that all the statements you have made and documents you have submitted to obtain your child's immigrant visa are true and correct.

If your documentation is complete, the visa should be ready for you or your agency representative to pick up at the Adoption Unit immediately after the oath-taking ceremony. Your child's passport containing the visa, as well as a package of related materials, will be returned to you or your agent at that time.

We appreciate your cooperation and we look forward to meeting you and your newest family member.

With best wishes,

Adopted Children Immigrant Visa Unit
